Amy Winehouse received a standing ovation after singing at a London awards show Tuesday night – her first performance since canceling her recent tour dates.
“At the end of the performance, the room erupted in applause and wild cheering,” Kevin Milburn, director of the Mercury Music Prize (which is awarded to the best British and Irish album of the past year), tells PEOPLE.
Amid allegations of drug and alcohol abuse with husband Blake Fielder-Civil (whom she married in May), Winehouse – citing exhaustion – checked into a “retreat” in Essex, England last month and canceled several tour dates. She also withdrew from the Sept. 9 MTV awards in order to “support her well-being.”
If only Amy Winehouse would stay sober all the time, she would be one of the greatest singers in the world in no time. Her absolutely amazing voice is undeniable, but all those drugs and violence will eventually and certainly get the better of her. Lets hope that the standing ovation at Mercury Music Prize would spur her towards the path of recovery.
