Remember the movie, Lorenzo’s Oil starring Susan Sarandon and Nick Nolte?
Easily one of the most inspiring and moving films I’ve ever watched. It’s based on the true story of Augusto and Michaela Odone’s struggle to find an effective treatment for their son Lorenzo, stricken with ALD. ALD is a rare nerve disease and patients are expected to live no more than 2 years.
The real Lorenzo Odone passed away on 30 March 2008, 22 years longer than when his doctors had predicted.
Lorenzo Odone died on Friday at his home in America, one day after his 30th birthday.
He had fallen ill with aspiration pneumonia after getting food stuck in his throat, said his father Augusto Odone.

He began bleeding heavily and died before an ambulance could reach him.
‘He could not see or communicate but he was still with us,’ Mr Odone said. ‘He did not suffer…that’s the important thing.’
RIP, Lorenzo.
